Blink Outdoor 4 Review: The Best Budget Wireless Security Camera?

We independently test everything we recommend. When you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Modern smart home exterior

The Blink Outdoor 4 is Amazon’s cheapest way to watch the outside of your home. There are no wires to run: pop in two AA batteries, screw it to a wall and it records motion for up to two years. We mounted one over a driveway and another in a back garden for a month of rain, wind and night-time visitors.

Quick Answer

The Blink Outdoor 4 is the best budget wire-free security camera, especially for Alexa homes. Battery life is outstanding and installation takes minutes. Just budget for a Blink subscription or a Sync Module 2 with a USB drive if you want to save clips.

Blink Outdoor 4 — Key Specs

Resolution 1080p HD
Field of view 143° diagonal
Night vision Infrared
Power 2× AA lithium batteries (up to 2 years)
Weather rating IP65
Audio Two-way talk
Storage Cloud (Blink subscription) or local via Sync Module 2 + USB drive

Design & Installation

The camera is a small, square, black box that is easy to hide under eaves. The included mount screws to a wall in a couple of minutes, and because there is no power cable you can put it anywhere within Wi-Fi range. We had two cameras running in under 15 minutes.

Most bundles include the Sync Module 2 hub, which connects the cameras to your network and extends battery life. Plug it in somewhere central indoors.

Video & Night Vision

Daytime 1080p footage is sharp enough to identify faces and read a number plate on our driveway at about 5 metres. The 143-degree view covers a wide area without too much fisheye distortion. At night, infrared vision produces clear black-and-white footage out to about 6 metres.

It is not 2K or 4K, and fine details blur at a distance, but for the price it is very good.

Motion & Person Detection

Motion alerts arrive on your phone within a few seconds. Blink’s dual-zone detection combines a motion sensor with the image sensor, which reduced false alerts from swaying trees. Person detection — which only alerts you when a human is seen — requires a Blink subscription. Without it, expect more alerts from cars, cats and passing headlights.

Battery Life

Blink claims up to two years on two AA lithium batteries, based on typical use. After a month with around 20 events a day, the app still showed batteries as “OK”, and our projection puts it at 12–18 months. Heavy traffic and frequent live-view checks will shorten that.

Storage & Subscription

You have two choices. A Blink Basic plan (about $3 a month per camera) or Plus plan (about $10 a month for unlimited cameras) saves clips in the cloud for 60 days and unlocks person detection. Alternatively, plug a USB drive into the Sync Module 2 for local storage with no monthly fee — you lose person detection but keep the clips.

What to Know Before Buying

  • Use AA lithium batteries — alkaline cells drain quickly
  • Person detection and cloud clips require a Blink subscription
  • Add a USB drive to the Sync Module 2 for free local storage
  • Mount it 2–3 metres high and angled down for the best motion detection
