Runner on a beach

The Garmin Forerunner 265 is the watch we recommend most often to runners — from first-time 5K runners to marathoners chasing a PR. It combines a bright AMOLED display with Garmin’s most accurate GPS and a coaching system that tells you when to push and when to rest. We ran 300 km with it across road, track and trail.

Quick Answer

The Forerunner 265 is the best running watch for most runners. The GPS is excellent, the training guidance is genuinely useful, and battery life easily covers a week of training. On a tight budget, the Forerunner 165 gives you most of the experience for much less.

Design & Display

The 265 is light and comfortable enough to wear to bed, which matters because much of its coaching depends on sleep and overnight heart-rate variability. The AMOLED screen is sharp and bright even in direct sun, and it is a big step up from the older transflective Garmin displays.

Garmin kept its five physical buttons alongside the touchscreen. When you are sweaty or wearing gloves, buttons are far more reliable than swiping, and we used them for almost every run.

GPS Accuracy

With multi-band GPS turned on, the 265 tracked tightly through city streets and under tree cover. On a running track it stayed within a few metres of the official distance, and pace readings were steady rather than jumping around. This is the main reason we recommend it over cheaper watches.

Training Features

Training Readiness gives you a morning score based on sleep, recovery, training load and HRV. Daily suggested workouts then recommend an easy run, tempo session or rest day, and adapt if you miss a day. After a few weeks, the advice felt surprisingly accurate.

The race predictor, performance condition and running dynamics (with a compatible sensor) give data-hungry runners plenty to study, but the watch never forces it on you.

Battery Life

We averaged about 9 days per charge with five hours of running a week, the always-on display off and multi-band GPS on. That is below Garmin’s 13-day maximum but still means charging only once a week. Turning on the always-on display cuts that roughly in half.

Smart Features

You get phone notifications, Garmin Pay contactless payments, weather and calendar widgets. The Music version stores playlists from Spotify and others for phone-free runs. It is not as app-rich as an Apple Watch, but it covers the essentials well.

Tips for New Forerunner Owners

  • Wear it to sleep — Training Readiness needs overnight data
  • Turn on multi-band GPS for city and trail running
  • Add a chest strap for accurate interval heart rate
  • Leave the always-on display off to get about a week of battery

What We Like

  • Excellent multi-band GPS
  • Bright, sharp AMOLED screen
  • Useful Training Readiness and suggested workouts
  • Buttons plus touchscreen
  • About a week of battery

What Could Be Better

Who Should Buy It

  • Buy it if you run three or more times a week and want structured, adaptive training advice.

  • Skip it if you want navigation and maps — look at the Forerunner 965.
  • Skip it if you just want step counting and sleep tracking — a Fitbit Charge 6 is far cheaper.
