Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) Review: Still the Best Cheap Smart Speaker?

We independently test everything we recommend. When you buy through our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Small Bluetooth speaker

The Echo Dot (5th Gen) is Amazon’s best-selling smart speaker and, for many people, the first smart home device they ever buy. It looks almost the same as the 4th Gen, but Amazon has improved the speaker, added a temperature sensor and made it a Matter controller. We used it in a kitchen and a bedroom for a month to see how it holds up.

Quick Answer

The Echo Dot (5th Gen) is the best cheap smart speaker for most homes. It sounds noticeably better than older Dots, controls almost every smart home brand, and regularly drops to around $25–$30 on sale. If you care about music, spend more on an Echo (4th Gen) or a Sonos Era 100.

Design & Setup

The 5th Gen keeps the same fabric-covered sphere with a light ring glowing at the base. It is small enough for a bedside table and comes in charcoal, glacier white and deep sea blue. There is also a version with a clock on the front, which we recommend for bedrooms.

Setup through the Alexa app takes about two minutes. If you bought it through your Amazon account, it often arrives pre-linked, and you only need to connect it to Wi-Fi.

Sound Quality

Amazon says the new driver produces up to twice the bass of the 4th Gen, and it is clearly fuller. Voices on podcasts and news briefings sound natural, and pop music has more body than you would expect from a speaker this small. Turn it past about 70% and the bass starts to distort, so it is better for background music than parties.

You can pair two Dots as a stereo pair, or connect it to a bigger Bluetooth speaker if you want more power.

Alexa & Everyday Use

Alexa responds quickly and hears you across a room, even with a tap running. Timers, shopping lists, weather, calendar reminders and music requests all work reliably. Tapping the top of the speaker snoozes alarms and pauses music, which is handy in the kitchen when your hands are messy.

Smart Home Control

This is where the Dot shines. It works with thousands of devices — lights, plugs, thermostats, robot vacuums and video doorbells — and it is a Matter controller, so newer Matter devices set up quickly. The built-in temperature sensor can trigger routines, such as turning on a fan when a room gets above 25°C.

If you use an eero mesh network, the Dot can also act as a small Wi-Fi extender, adding coverage in a dead zone.

Privacy

A physical button turns off the microphones, and a red light shows when they are disabled. You can review and delete voice recordings in the Alexa app, and set recordings to delete automatically.
