The GoPro HERO13 Black does not reinvent the action camera — it refines it. GPS is back, the battery is bigger, there is a new magnetic mounting system, and a range of snap-on HB-series lenses opens up macro, anamorphic and ultra-wide shooting. We used it for six weeks of mountain biking, snorkelling, skiing and family vlogging to find out whether it is still the one to buy.
Quick Answer
Yes — the GoPro HERO13 Black is still the best all-round action camera. Its stabilisation, image quality in daylight and accessory ecosystem are unmatched. If you mostly film at night or indoors, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro handles low light better for less money.

Design & Build
From the outside the HERO13 looks almost identical to the last three GoPros: a rugged rubberised cube with a front selfie screen and a touch screen on the back. The two differences are underneath. The fold-out mounting fingers now sit next to a magnetic latch mount, so you can swap between a helmet and a chest mount in a second, and the lens cover has changed to recognise the new HB-series lens mods automatically.
It remains waterproof to 10 metres without a case, which covered all of our snorkelling and pool sessions. For diving you will still want GoPro’s Protective Housing.
Video Quality
In daylight the HERO13 produces the best-looking footage of any action camera we have tested. Colours are punchy without looking fake, detail holds up well at 5.3K, and the 10-bit colour option gives editors extra room to grade. Slow motion is excellent too: 4K at 120fps and 2.7K at 240fps let you slow down jumps and splashes without an obvious drop in sharpness.
Low light is where it falls behind. At dusk and indoors the smaller sensor produces visible noise, and DJI’s Osmo Action 5 Pro and Insta360’s Ace Pro 2 both look cleaner. It is not bad — it is simply no longer the best when the sun goes down.
Stabilisation
HyperSmooth is still the gold standard. On rocky singletrack, footage looked like it was shot on a gimbal, and the horizon stayed level on ski runs. Pair it with the Max Lens Mod 2.0 and you unlock 360-degree Horizon Lock, which keeps the horizon perfectly flat even if the camera does a full barrel roll.
Battery Life
The new 1900mAh Enduro battery is about 10% larger than before. In our tests it recorded roughly 1 hour 40 minutes of continuous 4K30 footage and a little under an hour at 5.3K60. That is better than the HERO12, but DJI still lasts longer. Carry a spare battery for full days out. Note that older GoPro batteries do not fit the HERO13.
Lens Mods & Accessories
The HB-series lenses are the most interesting upgrade. The Macro Lens Mod lets you focus a few centimetres from the lens, the Anamorphic Lens Mod gives a wide, cinematic look with lens flares, and the ND filter pack adds natural motion blur for driving and cycling shots. The camera detects each lens and changes its settings automatically.
GoPro’s accessory range is still its biggest advantage. Almost every mount, harness and case sold for action cameras is designed for GoPro first.
Before You Buy
Who Should Buy It
- Buy it if you film sports, travel or outdoor adventures in daylight and want the smoothest footage possible.
- Buy it if you want the widest choice of mounts and accessories.
- Skip it if you film mostly indoors or at night — the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is better in low light.
- Skip it if you already own a HERO12 Black; the upgrade is small unless you want lens mods.

Our Verdict: The Safest Action Camera to Buy
The GoPro HERO13 Black is not a revolution, but it is the most polished action camera you can buy. Unmatched stabilisation, great daylight footage and creative lens mods keep it on top — just bring a spare battery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the GoPro HERO13 Black waterproof?
Yes. It is waterproof to 10 m (33 ft) without a housing. For scuba diving, use GoPro’s Protective Housing, which is rated to 60 m.
Do I need a GoPro subscription?
No. The camera works fully without one. GoPro Premium adds unlimited cloud backup, auto highlight videos and damage replacement.
Can I use my old GoPro batteries?
No. The HERO13 uses a new 1900mAh Enduro battery with a different shape. Older batteries will not fit.
Is the HERO13 Black good for vlogging?
It works, thanks to the front screen and good audio, but a dedicated vlog camera like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 gives better skin tones and focus on faces.
